Mash your home up!
by Andrea Reginato on February 19th, 2009
Here is a simple introduction to the connection between web and home automation. It’s my Master thesis in Computer Science at Cà Foscari, actually =)
It’s about the idea of a flexible house you can mash up by interacting with existing web apps. I put it in some slides I presented at Dorkbot Milan in January.
I’m interested in many rising projects linking hardware&web: take a look.
Hope you find it interesting too.

Nice presentation, I’m always been intrigued by home automation.
I think the approach make sense, because devices are sources, identified by URIs.
But what is the state-of-art of this kind of hardware? How can I connect my oven and command it remotely to warmup my pizza, before I’ve been back at home? :P

There are a *lot* of standards for making what you want. Some of them are open, others are closed, so you can’t use all of them. But the main problem is that they are not web related. At the moment if you want to warmup your pizza through, let’s say your iPhone, you should useArduino. It is not domotic related (for now…), but you can make amazing things.
Look at tinker.it if you are curious, or write me for more info ;-)

Nice… The possiblities are endless with an open architecure – controlling via an iPhone on the move or through a website. We’re evloving the idea of a “software bridge” in the house which could have secure APIs for control scnearios. Devices would use wireless protocols… it could even integrate with RFID tags – maybe music and entertainment could be personalised as you arrive home.

The idea of software bridge is necessary, but is easy to create “another” way to control our house. The key for me is “semplicity” as is too much easy the definition of a new way to comunicate that a “samll” group of people will use.
Anyway the scenarios we have in front of us are infinite and just exciting, and for this the system need to be open and flexible. Personalization, semplicity and openess are key words
