The last Hack-Up consisted of the development of 3 new projects. The code is available here.

The Arduino keynote countdown is the right™ way to control the time for the speaker and the audience. It’s an analog time-meter with a gauge display that shows the remaining time for the speech, with three coloured leds that warns the speaker when time is about to finish. Made by Costantino, Giovanni, Cristian Maglie and Luca D’Angelo.

The “Facebook Let’s Go Out” web application uses the Facebook API to provide an event aggregation and search service. It does it in two steps: (1) the users instruct the application to download their events. Events are merged into a common events database but the users’ identities are not stored. The database is fully anonymous (working demo here ); (2) the users query the database with a location and a day to find all the matching events. Made by Ivan, Emanuel Carnevale and Paolo Montrasio.

To conclude, the “Facebook GeekShare” app is developed by Andrea Reginato, Stefano Cobianchi, Vincenzo Acinapura e Nicolas Amato. They made a working version allowing to insert some snippets, highlight them and share with some Facebook friends.

But what’s Hack-Up? And why would anybody be interested in it?

Hack-Up is an informal meeting for people sharing a common passion for technology, hacking devices and code.

It works like this: people propose different ideas and groups are self-assembled. Each group has to develop a project in 4 hours. All projects are published in an open wiki allowing anybody to use or implement them. No long term commitment, no remorse about leaving, no problem branching the project and building on it and making it your own. It’s that easy!

These are the projects we are going to focus on:

• Continue Project TAG from previous Hack-Up to create an easy way to put projects online.
• Video manipulation: flash applications to allow shared videos manipulation of virtual objects.
• Continue Arduino Jabber Knock from previos Hack-Up to get it routed via Pachoube.

I started thinking about it when I first saw replies on Youtube. Don’t know what replies are on YT? When you watch a video you can reply quickly, directly on Youtube’s site by writing a text comment or by recording a short video directly with your webcam on your browser.

This feature is great, it allows users to quickly participate in discussions, by using an engaging platform like videos.
I decided to work on an application where video discussions wouldn’t be only a feature, but rather video discussions were the core of my idea. At the time I wasn’t aware of other similar projects.

After a few months of hard work altomic.com was born. Users can record their own videos and reply to videos sent by their contacts. The mos difficult part of this application is the video streaming technology, I had no previous experience with Flash and I had to learn a bit of it. It took me a few months, but finally I got it working.
This is just an alpha version of the application, there is still a lot of work to do on the technology side and on the community side, as I want to build a tiny and engaged community of users.
